Review China SMT Forum 2007

China SMT Forum 2007 establishes itself as leading conference for China’s electronics sector

Apr 02, 2007

Stuttgart / Shanghai, April 2, 2007 – With the organisation of the China SMT Forum, Business Media China AG (BMC AG), a company that specialises in media and marketing in China, participates in the growth trend of the electronics sector. BMC AG was able to immediately establish the China SMT Forum as a leading event within the Chinese electronics sector.

The success of the China SMT Forum, which was held from March 22-23, 2007 at the Shanghai International Convention Center, once more emphasises BMC AG’s core competence of organising high-technology events. More than 200 delegates, predominantly from the Chinese electronics industry, participated in the two-day conference. Most of the speakers were internationally renowned experts from science and economy and, in particular, specialists in the field of the printed circuit board design technology SMT (Surface Mount Technology).

The China SMT Forum’s premiere in 2007 was organised by BMC AG and conceptually developed in close cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institut, Berlin, and Prof. Mathias Nowottnick from the University of Rostock. Nowottnick also presides over the conference committee, which was responsible for assembling the conference’s contents and the constellation of participating persons.

As the list of keynote speakers strikingly proves, this constellation was top-class: Prof. Hans-Jürgen Albrecht (Siemens AG), Dongkai Shangguan (Flextronics), Dr. Hannes Voraberger (AT&S), Dr. Joey Pan (Bosch Sensortec), and Dr. Hans Walter (Fraunhofer IZM) delivered impressive reviews at the respective sessions that dealt with “Lead-free Implementation“, “Advanced Circuit Assembling“, “New Printed Circuit Board Technologies“, “Developments in Packaging“, and “Solutions for Reliable Assemblies“.

Particularly noteworthy was the keynote speech held by Professor Wolfgang Scheel (Fraunhofer IZM) on the topic “The Development of PCB for the Next Decade”, which met with great interest among the Chinese delegates.

The event was supported by important Chinese professional associations such as the China Semi-Conductor Industry Association (CSIA) and the China Communication Industry Association (CCIA). Being the event’s co-organiser, the Shanghai Science and Technology Development and Exchange Center (SSTDEC) boasts of excellent relations to leading Chinese scientists and industry representatives.

Predominantly representing the Chinese branches of international electronics brands like Panasonic, Intel, Sharp, and General Electric, but also suppliers for the automotive industry like Bosch and Siemens, the delegates were convinced of the high level of the more than 20 speeches and emphasised their interest with lively discussions after the respective sessions. This was also underlined by Ding Long from Sharp Office Equipments: “The China SMT Forum is by far the best event on this topic that I have ever attended in China. The organisation is outstanding and the quality of the contributors exceeds my expectations.”

Moreover, the collective lunch breaks and the SMT Night, which took place on the event’s first night in the dome section of the Convention Center, offered room for conversations with the internationally renowned speakers from institutions like the Fraunhofer IZM, the North American organisation iNEMI, and companies such as W.C. Heraeus, Philips, Indium, Flextronics, and Siemens.
“The China SMT Forum offers us an excellent networking platform,” said Teoh Chun Kiat from VTech Ltd., Hong Kong, in informal talks at the event. “Here, the bridging between science and industry has finally been achieved – an exchange about state-of-the-art technologies that has not been possible so far in China.”

But also the speakers were absolutely taken with both the interest and the knowledge of the gathered audience: “The questions revealed the delegates’ high level of expertise”, said Susan Zhao from Philips Applied Technologies. “This is a unique event in China that compares favourably with international events.” Prof. Nowottnick, chairman of the expert committee, felt very happy about the lively discussions that followed the speeches: “Intensive conversations like these cannot be taken for granted on international conferences. They give evidence of the enormous thirst for knowledge of the Chinese professionals, who really profited from the contact with experts.”

The “Sino-European RoHS Dialogue” that was held parallel to the conference met with particular interest. The Chinese RoHS (Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment) directives, which became effective as of March 1, 2007, were presented by government representative Luo Daojun during a three-hour tutorial. Dr. Jutta Müller from the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration examined the directives within an international context. The session was rounded off by Hans-Jochen Lückefett’s speech on the topically related WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) directive. With more than 40 participants, the event was fully booked.

Likewise, the organiser – not a newcomer in the sector – was highly pleased: “We are very glad that we were immediately able to establish the China SMT Forum as the leading event for the Chinese SMT & MPT sector”, said Klaus M. Hilligardt, Chief Executive Officer of BMC AG and founder of the SMT / Hybrid / Packaging in Nuremberg. “The China SMT Forum perfectly complements our portfolio of high-technology events. Especially in this sector, we expect a high national and international demand in the future.”

Bob Pfahl from the International Electronics Manufacturing Initiative (iNEMI) summarised his impressions as follows: “This is the right event at the right time and in the right place. We at iNEMI look forward to the upcoming cooperation with BMC AG and we are convinced that the decisions on the future applications of this technology will be made here in China. This is the place to be!”

BMC AG is an international media company, which combines key competences in advertising solutions, exhibition organising, and trade publishing. BMC was founded by Klaus M. Hilligardt, who also created the SMT / Hybrid / Packaging in Nuremberg.
